What is a "Gallery Walk"?

(skip through the next few slides if this is not your first Gallery Walk with the class)

"So what is a 'Gallery Walk'? Well, it comes from the idea of how people walk through an Art Gallery - does anybody know what an 'Art Gallery' is?"

(student ideas - getting at something like a museum, where people look at or buy art, etc.)

"Right - so a 'Gallery Walk' is looking at some work you all made (your About Me posters) and treating them like art in a gallery."

What is expected at an Art Gallery?

"So how do people act when looking at art in an art gallery?"

(student share-out - getting to ideas like 'quiet,' 'looking carefully,' 'taking time,' 'thinking about it,' etc.)

"So people take their time at a gallery - being quiet and calm as they take the artwork very seriously. Often, people even look for connection to the art - something that they like or that reminds them of their own life. So we're going to do the same thing."

Gallery Walk CHAMPS

  • C - Voice Level 0
  • H - Silent Hand Signal
  • A - Finding similarities with classmates
  • M - Standing still, then moving only at set time
  • P - Filling out every students' sheet
"So we'll have similar expectations for our Gallery Walk. Since this is the first time we're doing it, we're going to go really slow and be really quiet. As we get better at this, we can start moving some more, and maybe talking a little bit."

"But for now - let's go over these CHAMPS expectations."

(go over - note that the goal of the activity is to rotate to different students' work and try to find similarities - and writing them onto everybody's sheet)

(next slide)

Let's Walk

(Pass out Gallery Walk fill-in sheets)

"So now that we've gone over the expectations, let's get ready to start our Gallery Walk. Remember - this should be a silent activity, so we should be silent until the activity is over, and I ask you all to talk again."

(next slide)

1. Fill Out Your form

"First - fill out your own form with your name and the date. Once you've done that, you're going to leave it at your desk with your computer for each visitor to write on - do not take it with you when we move."

2. Get Your Poster Ready

"Now that your fill-in sheet is ready, make sure that your 'My Colors' poster is up on your computer screen, and that your computer is safely set up on your desk."

3. Stand Up

"Okay - now I want everybody to silently stand up. Do not go anywhere - just stand up and stay next to your desk. We will be standing for the rest of this activity, but you should only be moving or walking when I ask you to. Remember to stay calm and quiet and serious like we're in an art gallery."

"Make sure you have something to write with before we move on."

4. Rotate

(counter clock-wise)
"Okay - now you're going to rotate to your neighbor's spot - moving counter clock-wise (to your right). Stand at their spot right in front of their poster (computer) and fill-in sheet."

5. View and Write

(Your name and one similarity)
"Now you will have about two (or less - teacher discretion) minutes to look at the poster in front of you and notice one thing you have in common with the person that made it - similar moods in a certain color, same way it feels, etc. Try to come up with something that isn't really obvious (like 'we both get mad') if possible."

"Okay, I'm starting the time now - look carefully and think silently."

"When you're ready, write your name on the first open spot, and write the thing you have in common with the person on the line under your name."

6. REPEAT

"Okay, now we're going to rotate again. Move one more spot over to your right."

(continue until out of time, etc.)

Notes:
For 6th grade or difficult classes, stick to moving within one group. For older students, try rotating to separate tables/groups, etc. as you see fit. Try to have students get to as many posters as possible.

(when finished, go to next slide)

REFLECT

What did you notice?  How did we do?
"Go back to your seats."

(once seated)

"So take a minute to think about how that Gallery Walk went. What are some things you noticed when looking at other people's posters? How do you think we did with the activity?"

(give one minute to think, then share out in pairs, large group, etc.; if time, reflect on what we can do better next time - keep in mind that, in future, this will set up students to give each other peer feedback and other more complicated reflection on each other's work)
