Basic Idea

  • Occurred 4 months after Pearl Harbor. 
  • American & Filipino POW- 50,000-70,000
  • During WWll
  • Began April 9, 1942

Camp O'donnell

  • Approx. 54,000 men at camp
  • No food, water, facilities to house them. 
  • Forced to drink polluted water.
  • 10,000 died early on. 
  • 1600 Americans died, 10,000 Filipinos died.

CAmp

  • At Camp O'Donnell sanitation was non-existent. 
  • Dec. 1944, Japanese killed 139 P.O.W.-Palawan Massacre 
  • Trying to prevent survivor stories. 
  • Eleven Prisoners escaped. 

Conditions

  • Heat
  • Malaria 
  • dehydration
  • dysentary
  • deprived of food and water

60 miles

  • Soldiers were starving&dehydrated
  • Forced to walk 60 miles in 2 weeks.
  • Some dropped dead
  • Others killed by Japanese along the way 
  • Put in box cars.

Invasion

  • Japanese (1000) defeated 15,000 defenders 
  • It wasn't a lack of numbers for surrender. 
  • Men not in proper health / no weapons.

John E. Love

  • 11 POW escaped-one was John E. Love.
  • Death March ended April 15, 1942.
  • One of the survivors, John E. Love, died at 91 recently.
  • Was 19 during the Bataan Death March.
  • Carried 1,000 bodies to graveyard.
