BY: ALLISON NUNEMAKER

Furman Owens, 12 years old. Can't read. Doesn't know his A,B,C's. Said, "Yes I want to learn but can't when I work all the time." Been in the mills 4 years, 3 years in the Olympia Mill. Columbia, South Carolina.

A boy, no older than 5 or 6, working in dangerous conditions. He doesn't have any shoes to protect his feet. His job is to take the spools of yarn off of the spindles.

A young girl, working in a mill. She is no older than 8 or 9 years old. She has been working for a whole year, and she sometimes works at night time.

In this picture, there is a whole bunch of boys, who are picking slate out of the coal. If they slack off at all, there are people that will beat them with a stick. While working, their hands should become "pruned" and will be easily cut from the sharp slate pieces.
