CONSTRUCTION

  • Pope Julius held a competion for the design of the basilica
  • Donata Bramante had the winning design
  • The winning design was similar to the panteon
  • Bramante made a cross like shape with use of domes
  • When Pope Julius died in 1513 and a new pope took over

HISTORY

  • St. Peters basilica was based around where Peter was buried
  • Saint peter was buried and marked with a small red stone
  • About 130 years later they constructed old st. Peter basilica over where he was buried
  • During some construction they discovered a crypt full of christian burials
  • Pope XII said during a podcast that they had discovered the tomb of saint peter
