WHO WERE THE BOYS?

March 25, 1931. Nine black males were riding on a freight train. One of the boys was suddenly stepped on by a white male. Continuing the event, began fights between the two races. The whites reported the event and got the boys kicked off the train. Two girls also reported being raped by some of the boys. The girls were underaged.
On April 6, 1931 in Scottsboro, Alabama was where & when the original trial was held. Just 12 days after the arrest of the boys. The outcome was affected by racism.
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) decided not to help because they were afraid of the effects if some of the boys were guilty.
The communists hidden agenda was to recruit blacks from the south and north. The south treated the communist with just a little more respect than the blacks.
DEFENSE LAWYERS
- The boy's lawyers were not paid or prepared
- One lawyer hadn't done a case in decades
- Most of the lawyers weren't at all responsible
UNFAIR TRIALS
- Haywood Patterson described the first trial as"one big smiling white face"
- Newspapers were saying they were guilty even before trials
- Instead of one at a time, the boys were all tried together
- Racism affected the case also
Justice or Injustice?
- The trials were injustice
- Some of the boys died without being pardoned
- Most of the people against the case were racist
- Parts of the case were just lies

- It laid out the foundation for the novel
