The Monte San Giorgio is located at the bottom of the Southern Alps, between Canton Ticino and the regions of Monte Pravello and Monte Orsa in Province of Varese. Monte San Giorgio is one of the most important fossil deposit in the world, for the Middle Triassic, a geological period which took place between 247 and 237 millions of years ago. The fossils coming from this mountain are known for their variety and their exceptional good conservation, they have been excavated and analysed by Swiss and Italian palaeontologists from 1850.
Since 2010 Monte San Giorgio has become a transnational UNESCO World Heritage site.
Three pile-dwelling stations situated on the lakes of Varese are included in the UNESCO lists.
The Isolino Virginia, situated on Lake Varese opposite Biandronno, was inhabited from the Early Neolithic period up to the end of the Bronze Age, a long period in which the population, responding to changes in the water levels in the lake, was frequently forced to adapt and move their dwellings, occupying from time to time other areas on the island.
The Archaeological Park at Castelseprio includes a fortified area that extends down the valley as far as Torba and an extramural village. At the "castrum" the entrance was via a bridge. The bell tower is an adaptation of one of the three Late Roman watch towers. Amongst the residential buildings there are private houses from various eras and houses that were occupied by the church canons up until the XVI century. In the extramural village the oratory Santa Maria "foris portas", erected between the VII and the IX century is decorated with extraordinary series of frescoes that narrate the story of Mary and of Christ's childhood according to the traditions of the apocryphal gospel.
The Sanctuary of the Sacro Monte of Varese is one of the most important of the Sacri Monti, which are acknowledged as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Located at a height of 883 m a.s.l., the Sanctuary is the culmination of a route taken by the faithful up the slopes of Monte Velate. The 14 chapels each have a portico of a different design, and are embellished with statues and frescoes by the major Lombard artists of the 17th century.
