THE HISTORY OF CHAMPS-ELYSEES
- The Champs-Élysées and its gardens were originally laid out in 1667 by André Le Nôtre--
- --as an extension of the Tuileries Garden, the gardens of the Tuileries Palace--
- --which had been built in 1564
- Le Nôtre had rebuilt in his own formal style for Louis XIV in 1664
One of history's most momentous events to occur there took place on June 14th, 1940, when German troops occur marched down the Champs-Élysées in celebration of France's fall during the beginning of World War II. Four years later, American soldiers made a similar march down the famed street after liberating Paris at the war's end.
For now,The Avenue is one of the most famous streets in the world for upscale shopping. Adidas, Benetton, the Disney Store, Nike, Zara, H&M, Cartier, Bel Air Fashion, Toyota, Gap, and Sephora occupy major spaces. Traditionally home to popular brands, as well as luxury brands Louis Vuitton, Hugo Boss, Lancel, Guerlain, Lacoste, Hôtel de la Païva, Élysée Palace and Fouquet's.
Does it serve the same purpose when it was originially built?
Yes,at first the Champs-Élysées actually were fields to begin with, filled with the gardens of merchants who sold their goods in Paris' local markets.

The houses at Champs-Élysées have annual rents as high as €1.1 million (US$1.5 million) per 1,100 square feet (92.9 square meters) of space.
By the late 18th century, the bosquet plantings on either side were shaped in formal rectangular glades
Since 1975, it is the concluding destination of the Tour de France. Typically, the riders make six to eight circuits back and forth on the avenue, followed by the awards ceremony.
Every year on Bastille Day, the largest military parade in Europe passes down the Champs-Élysées, reviewed by the President of the Republic.
