How can you determine the age of a fossil?

  • You could look at the layers by its age.
  • You also look at the layers and see what is the oldest and which one is the youngest.

Radioactive Elements

  • Radioactive elements are elements that give off a steady amount of radiation as it slowly changes to a nonradioactive element.
  • Scientists can estimate the age of the rock by comparing the amount of radioactive element with the amount of a nonradioactive element.

Layers

  • The layers help you discover the approximate age for the fossils.
  • Younger rocks are normally on top and older layers are normally on the bottom.
