WATER POLLUTION

  • Point source
  • Non point source
  • Dangerous in ldc
  • Hurts aquatic life

NON -POINT SOURCE POLLUTION

  • Agriculture
  • Fertilizers, pesticides
  • Runoff

POINT SOURCE

  • Specific location
  • Manufacturing/processing
  • Food, steel, chemicals, sewage

EXAMPLES

  • Aral sea
  • Great lakes
  • Bod- biochem oxygen demand
  • Ddt
Shrinking of Aral Sea due to diversion of river water to agriculture led to large amount of polluted runoff.

Great Lakes pollution from DDT and other pesticides caused BOD or biochemical oxygen demand.

AIR POLLUTION

  • Global warming/greenhouse
  • Ozone damage- UV Damage
  • Burning of fossil fuels
  • CFC, Co, hydrocarbon-smog
  • Sulfur/nitric oxides-acid rain
Mainly caused by fossil fuels.
Contributes to global warming and greenhouse.
CFC- Chlorofluorocarbons, Carbon Monoxide, Hydrocarbons form smog.
Smog can cause respiratory problems.
Sulfur and nitric oxides from burning fossil fuels can cause acid rain.

SOLID WASTE POLLUTION

  • Paper, cardboard, metal
  • Sanitary landfill
  • Hazardous waste
  • Incineration
  • Mining
Mainly dealt with by landfills and incineration.
Leading causes are mining and discarding of paper cardboard, and metal.
