FINDING GOLD

  • I, James Marshall discovered gold at the site of a sawmill construction project
  • As soon as word got out tens of thousands of people of all occupations came flooding in
  • All of these people were eager to find gold for them and there families

People such as trappers, farmers, sailors, lawyers, preachers and people from nearly every other occupation heard of the site of gold in California

Nearly everyone that came were men. We were called the forty Niners.

THE STRUGGLE

  • For many people it was a struggle to get to California
  • The biggest struggle was crossing the Pacific ocean
  • The mining camps were very unsanitary and diseases also spread
  • Many people got sick

THE AFTER EFFECTS

  • The gold rush ended in 1852
  • After it was over terrible diseases were still there which got the Indians very sick
  • Warfare was also a problem after the gold rush
  • The population went from 150,000 to 30,00

It also had an effect on the Californios lost there land to the newcomers

FUN FACTS

  • The mining camps had hardly any women at all
  • When someone saw a women they immediately asked for bread
  • Because of the gold rush people started mining for gold I'm other places too
  • People found gold in Australia, South Africa, and Canada
