Once upon a time there was no light and people were in trouble, in the land there lived a Taniwha.

As the sun came up, a warrior called Tamarereti had woken up. He was STARVING!

He checked if there was any food, and there wasn't. So Tamarereti went to go fishing in his Waka to find fish.

He had been fishing for a while. He had caught 3 large fish, but the wind had gone.

After a long nap, he woke up and found he wasn't home, he was stuck on a different piece of land.

Since he was stuck, he thought to make a fire, cook him some dinner and think about how to get home.

Tamarereti noticed something in the distance, there were little pebbles that were shining from the light of the fire.

Tamarereti kept hold of them as he hopped in his boat with an idea.

Tamarereti threw the pebbles up into the sky and the pebbles showed him the way home.

The god of the sky cam to talk to Tamarereti. He said "Thank you. You made my sky brighter"

Tamarereti was pleased he had helped someone.

The god of the sky said he would throw Tamarereti's waka up into the sky.

Now days we can still see the waka in the sky in May-June. This is Matariki.
