COMPARING SEGMENTS

comparing slopes

PARALLEL OR PERPENDICULAR OR NEITHER

Parallel

  • If two segments have the same slope, they are parallel
  • If their slope are not the same, the segments are not parallel

Perpendicular

  • If the slopes of two segments are opposite reciprocals, they are perpendicular
  • This means the product of the slopes is -1
  • The segments form right angle(s)

Neither

  • If the slopes are not equal and...
  • the slopes are not negative reciprocals...
  • then the lines intersect at angles but not right angles

Comparing Lengths

  • When asked to compare lengths look for ratios
  • You are not looking at differences in lengths but...
  • rather at their proportion
  • For example, is one segment two times as long as another?

Dilations

  • dilations will produce parallel sides...
  • and proportional sides
