TIMELINESS AND CONFLICT

  • The first article I found was an example of both timeliness and conflict.
  • MINNEAPOLIS >> Matthew Stafford’s arm bled on the TCF Bank Stadium turf, and each breath he took brought another jolt of pain in the rest of his bruised and battered body. For a guy who was only sacked once on Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings, Stafford sure took a beating. The Detroit Lions did, too. Stafford needed X-rays on his chest and ribs after the game, and the Lions turned the ball over three times and committed some penalties in a 26-16 loss to the Vikings that dropped them to 0-2.
  • Timeliness is when the article is printed or posted soon after an event happens or before it happens. Conflict is any kind of negative issue or problem that is discussed in an article.
  • This story is an example of both timeliness and conflict. It's timeliness because this game occurred Sunday afternoon and was posted that very evening. It is conflict because the Lions are losing and experiencing a losing streak, while many of them are getting injured.
  • This article could also be an example of consequence because the team is now down 0-2.

CONSEQUENCE

  • Diabetes affects everyone differently. But the one thing everyone can probably agree on is that living with this disease can be expensive. Whether you have Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, you could face out of pocket expenses, even if you have insurance coverage. Beyond medications, doctor visits and the cost of meters and test strips, there can be the added expense of a healthy lifestyle. This could include everything from the cost of exercise and stress management to fresh, un-processed foods. The American Diabetes Association reports that people with diagnosed diabetes have average medical expenditures of about $13,700 per year, of which about $7,900 is attributed to diabetes. In fact the medical expenditures of people with diabetes are about 2.3 times higher on average than people without the disease. [1] Consider Buying Your Monitoring System Over the Counter As you may well know, an ongoing cost of diabetes management is the recurring need to purchase test strips. If your out of pocket costs for blood glucose test strips are high, you might benefit from buying your test strips over the counter. Until now you haven't been able to buy meters and test strips from leading brands over the counter at accessible prices, but now the FreeStyle family of products includes a glucose monitoring system available over the counter, without a prescription. The new FreeStyle Precision Neo meter and test strips provide patients with a quality alternative to using insurance and paying high copays for blood glucose test strips. You can find the FreeStyle Precision Neo meter and test strips at major retailers or drugstores in the diabetes supplies section or you can buy them online. Prices may vary, but the MSRP for 50 test strips is $21.99. For those of you who have a high copay for blood glucose test strips, this might be the more affordable option you've been looking for. To see how much you might save with this over the counter option, you'll want to compare the total cost of all the systems you're considering. Factor in both the meter cost and the ongoing expense of test strips.
  • Consequence in an article means something that will affect your life.
  • This article is an example of consequence because people are affected by the expenses of a life with diabetes.
  • I didn't see any other elements in this article.

HUMAN INTEREST

  • Jewel Kilcher says people can’t experience life’s joys without opening up and forcing themselves to be vulnerable. The four-time Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter fulfilled her philosophy on her new album, “Picking Up the Pieces,” and in her new memoir, “Never Broken: Songs Are Only Half the Story.” And she adhered to it at a performance and talk Saturday at Renaissance Unity spiritual community in Warren as part of a star-studded lineup for the inspirational gathering, “Renaissance 2015. Together, We Change Tomorrow.” Also scheduled to speak and/or perform were political commentator Cokie Roberts; R&B singer Kem, a former member of the church’s choir; 2011 Nobel Peace Prize recipient Laymah Gbowee; local singer Thornetta Davis; singer-composer Rickie Byers Beckwith from Agape in California; Academy Award-nominated director Ava DuVernay; and best-selling author Marianne Williamson, who served as senior minister at Renaissance Unity from 1997 through 2002.
  • Human interest is an article about a celebrity or a normal person doing something extraordinary. Normally it is an emotional piece.
  • This article is human interest because Jewel gets emotional and inspires her audience.
  • This article could also be a proximity article, since it was nearby.

PROXIMITY

  • The final Gratiot Cruise of the year takes place on Saturday in Chesterfield Township with a variety of special attractions and plenty of American-made hot rods and muscle cars on display. The 2015 North Gratiot Cruise runs from noon to 6 p.m. along Gratiot Avenue between Hall Road (M-59) and 23 Mile Road, with a car show beginning at 10 a.m. at Cruise Headquarters in the Art Van Furniture store parking lot.
  • Proximity in an article means the event occurred near you.
  • This article is an example of proximity because the Gratiot Cruise happens nearby.
  • I couldn't find any other examples of elements in this article.

PROMINENCE

  • Therese Tobin, the long-time chief trial attorney at the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office, could be seen as unflappable, methodical, sometimes almost stern in the courtroom as she gained conviction upon conviction in a long line of murder and assault trials. She experienced the emotions that come with grinding out justice to achieve closure for victims and their families. “That shot me in the heart,” she said of her internal reaction one time when loved ones of a victim asked whether there would be a hung jury in the trial after a there was a hung jury in another case before it. But she kept her feelings under wraps in the courtroom.
  • Prominence in an article means the subject is either a topic or person of importance.
  • This article is an example of prominence because it is about a woman leaving a very important job, after helping many people.
  • This article could also be an example of proximity, since it is so close.
