  • Born: February 5, 1723 in Gifford, Scotland.
  • Died: November 15, 1794 at age 71.
  • Occupation: Founding Father, clergyman,
  • President of College of New Jersey (now Princeton)

EARLY LIFE

  • He attended Haddington Grammar school.
  • He obtained a Master of Arts and a Bachelor of Divinity.
  • He received a Semeniary education for divinity.
  • This is basically a Roman Catholic type education.
  • He became a minister to the Church of Scotland.

  • He married Elizabeth Montgomery .
  • They had 10 children, only 5 survived to adulthood.
  • Witherspoon was a Protestant.
  • A nationalist and supporter of republicanism.

PLACE IN AMERICAN HISTORY

  • Witherspoon was a great supporter of the Declaration of Independence.
  • His signature is written on the declaration as well.

DEATH

  • Witherspoon suffered eye injuries and went blind in 1792.
  • He died in 1794 on his farm , Tusculum, at age 71.
