WHY TEMPERATURES VARY AT DIFFERENT LATITUDES

  • The 0° longitude is the equator and the sun hits it directly
  • High latitudes are colder cause sun has to wrap around the earth to reach it

GLOBAL WINDS

  • Windless rainy zone near equator
  • Jet stream- blow near top of troposhere
  • Trade winds- 30° N and S that creates steady winds
  • Prevailing westerlies- blow in opposite direction of trade winds

LOCAL WINDS

  • Sea breeze- created during day, cooler dense air over water has higher pressure
  • Land breeze- opposite of sea breeze

CORIOLIS EFFECT

THE ROTATION OF EARTH CAUSES MOVING AIR AND WATER TO TURN RIGHT

LAYERS OF ATMOSPHERE

TROPOSPHERE, STRATOSPHERE, MESOSPHERE, THERMOSPHERE, EXOSHPERE

WATER CYCLE

  • Hydrosphere- all water on earth
  • Evaporation- energy from the sun causes water to change from a liquid to a gas
  • Condensation- water vapor invthe atmosphere cools enough
