WIND ENERGY

BENIFITS

  • It is a clean fuel source.
  • A domestic source of energy.
  • It is sustainable.
  • It is cost effective.

CHALLENGES

  • Good wind sites are often located in remote locations.
  • Wind resource development may not be the most profitable use of the land.
  • Turbines may cause noice and aesthetic pollution.
  • The turbine blades may damage local wildlife.

ADVANTAGES OF PETROLEUM

  • Excellent source of organic molecules for building plastics, medicines.
  • Can withstand high heats without breakdown.
  • The cost of producing petroleum is relatively cheap.
  • Certain components make excellent solvents for paint, industrial use etc.

DISADVANTAGES

  • Release carbon dioxide.
  • We are running out.
  • Oil must be transported in ever increasing quantities.
  • Oil does contain some cancer causing compounds.

TURBINES

The cost of wind energy range from $31 to $84 per MWh in 2012. The cost of the wind turbine is the single largest cost component, and can make up 70% or more of the entire cost of a land-based wind project.

Petroleum products include transportation fuels, fuel oils for heating and electricity generation, asphalt and road oil, and the feedstocks used to make chemicals, plastics, and synthetic materials found in nearly everything we use today. About 74% of the 6.89 billion barrels of petroleum that we used in 2013 were gasoline, heating oil/diesel fuel, and jet fuel.
