PRESENTATION OUTLINE
Uncle Tom's Cabin is an anti-slavery novel written by Beecher Stowe, which was a novel about the reality of slavery at the time. This novel was regarded as one of the major causes for the civil war. It goes to show that even St.Clare, a Pro-Slave owner knows that slavery is cruel and disgusting. It describes that your mindset depends on where you live because of the laws and propaganda, as well as the way people act.
What is the contrast between the two fathers described in this excerpt?
The two fathers contrasts are different, although they had the same "iron will" their mindsets were based depending on where they settled down, such as New England, to "force an existence out of Nature", and settling down in Louisiana, to rule over man and woman to "force existence out of them. ' This was due to the influence, religion and laws there at the time which could have had an impact on the two fathers.
Why might St.Clare state that many slave owners "would scorn to use the full power which our savage laws put into our hands?"
This was due to the fact that all slave owners were white, all of the laws at the time were to benefit white people, and only them. Although some white slave owners didn't agree with the laws towards their slaves, Pro-Slave owners took advantage of their "savage laws" because the law allows them to do so as they please.
In what ways does Stowe present the issue of slavery as a moral one?
She shows that even St.Clare who is Pro-Slavery, knows the fact that slavery is inhuman and brutal. "What poor, mean trash this whole business of human virtue is!" This implies that St.Clare knows that slavery is wrong in every way, which shows slavery as an issue in the real world at the time. She tries to implement into her novel that all people are equal and should be treated as so. She believed slavery should be abolished.
Uncle Tom's Cabin is thought to be one of the major reasons for the civil war. It goes in depth about the experiences slaves had during that time period. Abraham Lincoln himself quoted "is this the little lady who made this great war?" Some white folks thought the novel to be illiterate and unrealistic, others argued it was true towards slaves. This is how the novel impacted debates among the white people. It made pro and anti slave folks realize their actions, which had a contribute to the civil war.
