DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

BY : VALERY GOMEZ

DOMINICAN IMMIGRANTS

  • Dominicans had become one of the fastest-growing immigrant populations and ranked as the fourth-largest Hispanic group in the United States, after Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, and Cubans.
  • Modern Dominicans trace their origins to colonial intermixtures of Native Amerindians, Africans, and European settlers.
  • They came to the United States by boat & the majority settled in the New York area.

OVERVIEW OF CULTURE

  • Dominicans feast on fried plantains called Tostones on a regular basis
  • Dominican society appearance is very important. People are extremely fashion conscious and believe that clothes indicate social standing and success. They take great pride in wearing good fabrics and clothes of the best standard they can afford like designer labels, particularly those from the USA.

CULTURAL ISSUES

  • Families do not look for help through the service system, because in most communities it does not exist. When police get involved into a family domestic problem there will be alot of tension because the Dominican people do not trust anyone with their family. They believe that they can fix whatever problem they have within family so they will not cooperate easily or betray their own family even if they hurt them.

CULTURAL STEREOTYOES

  • A common stereotype is that the majority of the woman there are prostitutes due to the fact that it's not illegal in The Dominican Republic.
  • Another stereotype about Dominicans is that the man usually like underage girls.
  • There is also a stereotype that says Dominican women only date white men to get into the U.S.
