The Eastern Orthodox church was very wealthy, had much trade and a lot of cities
The Roman Catholic church was very rural and not as wealthy as the eastern half

The Pope was the supreme religious authority

Priests could not marry, have to remain celibate

East: Emperor Irene in 800 C.E.

They thought that icons were a distraction. They thought it was disrespectful to God.

Roman Catholic Church

They liked the icons and enjoyed being able to have them in their homes and in the church. They also used them to spread religion.

In the Roman Catholic Church they only spoke Latin during liturgies

The Eastern Orthodox Church would speak in Greek or the local language .
