Plant symmetry

repetition of parts in an orderly fashion

plant symmetry cont.

  • radial symmetry
  • bilateral symmetry
  • symmetry is very common in plants

-2 main types of symmetry
-very common in plants

-R. symmetry: any line through will divide symmetrically

-B. symmetry: only one pair of symmetrical sides

-flower has radial symmetry
-flower's petals have bilateral symmetry

ocean tides

tides are caused by gravity and centrifugal force
-moon's gravity pulls ocean towards itself, centrifugal force pulls ocean on opposite side of the moon

Ocean Tides cont.

  • 2 high tides and 2 low tides each day
  • high tides are 12h 24min apart
  • during spring tides water level is highest
-high tides: water level is highest, low tide: water level is lowest

-2 high tides happen at the same time

-during neap tides water levels are lowest
-spring tides happen at new and full moons
-during new and full moons there is the moon and the sun's gravity pulling the oceans because they are in alignment

Moon cycles

the moon cycle has 4 main phases
-full moon, last quarter, new moon, first quarter

Moon cycles cont.

  • moon cycle rotates every 29 and a half days
  • the moon has these phases because of the sun
-light from the sun only illuminates half of the moon's surface

-depending on where the moon is in relation to earth, the moon will have different parts of it illuminated

Untitled Slide

-moon appears the way it does because of where the sun's rays are hitting it

Feeding and migration patterns

what influences the feeding and migration patterns of sea life

Feeding patterns and the moon

  • the moon and sun have a big effect on fish
  • fish are most active during spring tide
  • fish like to eat during full moon
-because their gravity has a big effect on Earth's oceans

-they become most active 4 days leading up to full moon and 4 days after new moon

-baitfish are illuminated by the brightness of the full moon

Feeding, Migration and currents

  • most migrations are annual
  • migrations can be horizontal or vertical
  • planktonic organisms are carried by the current
  • travel vertically on a daily cycle
-migrations are related to the seasons
-many animals migrate to reproduce

-most are horizontal
-some species travel deliberately, some are carried by currents

-very deep during the day, rise near the surface at night
-their predators, such as fish, follow them

life of pi

how this topic relates to the novel

Pi's Algae island

  • many examples of natural symmetry
  • "...a green plateau with a green forest in its centre."(294)
  • "...evenly scattered, identically sized ponds..."(294)
  • "...unmistakeable impression of following a design..."(294)
  • "...shore was unvarying in its features..."(299)
-pi's island is made entirely of algae

-the algae has radial symmetry
-book describes algae as having a white centre tube with a surrounding green tube which is encased with an outer wall

-tree leaves have bilateral symmetry, they are broad and end in a point

-ponds are radially symmetrical

-entire island itself seems to be radially symmetrical

To be a castaway...

  • "...a point perpetually at the centre of a circle."(239)
  • "Your gaze is always a radius."(239)
  • "...above you two opposing circles spin about."(239)
  • "The sun distresses you like a crowd..."(239)
  • "...moon distresses you[..by..]reminding you of your solitude..."(239)
-things may appear to change however the geometry never changes

-everything around Pi is symmetrical

-the same cycle of day and night above Pi
-same cycle of the sun, then the moon and stars

-phases of the moon are also repeated aprx. each month

-for Pi, everything is the same
-all in a constant cycle

Fishing for richard parker

  • Pi sees lots of fish under his raft at sunset
  • "With just one glance I discovered that the sea is a city."(194)
  • at certain times, Pi catches lots of fish
  • "...some days[..I..]could have all the fish I cared to gaff."(217)
-planktonic organisms rise close to the surface at night which explains more activity, the fish are feeding

-and at certain times he doesn't catch much

-this relates to the tides and moon phases, fishing would have been the best during spring tide(full or new moon)
-during this period Pi would have caught more fish than normal
-during neap tide, Pi would have had the worst fishing
