ABOUT AMENDMENT 1

  • Amendment one is the first amendment.
  • It was ratified on December 15, 1791.
  • Amendment 1 is part of the Bill of Rights.

WHAT THE AMENDMENT IS ABOUT

  • Freedom of religion means people can believe in what they want to.
  • Freedom of Speech means people can say what they want to.
  • Freedom of assembly means people can host meetings and have speeches.
  • Right to petition means people can go on strike and go against a company asking for raises.

DISADVANTAGES OF THIS AMENDMENT

  • The press can say bad things about people or businesses.
  • People can also swear and say other bad things to other people.
  • People can petition which will hurt businesses by making them look bad.

ADVANTAGES OF THIS AMENDMENT

  • People can believe any religion
  • People can say what they want too
  • Press can express their feelings on the news or newspaper
  • People can petition and fight for their own rights.

JOHN ZENGER TRIAL

  • His newspaper was critical to New York governor William Crosby.
  • His articles accused Crosby of rigging elections, stealing money, and land
  • Zenger was sued and sent to jail bail was £400 pounds.
  • Zenger had a trial and was thought too lose but won the case and was not quilty.
  • First amendment states freedom of the press.
