FORT SUMTER

  • Fort Sumter was a very strong federal fort in South Carolina
  • Federal troops refuse to surrender to the confederacy

BATTLE OF BULL RUN.

  • It showed that the war would not be an easy victory for the the union
  • Confederate troops drove the union army back

BATTLE OF ANTIETAM

  • Took place on September 17, 1862.
  • Despite the success the battle was the battle was the bloodiest of all.
  • It halted Lee's northward march.

BATTLE OF SHILOH

  • During the two days each side lost and gained ground.
  • Union reinforcements arrived and helped push the confederates into retreating.
  • This win helped the union control part of the Mississippi River valley.

SIEGE OF VICKSBURG

  • Lasted about six weeks before hunger forced confederates to surrender
  • The Mississippi River was now under union control.
