Chicano movement

Conditions

  • Mexicans thought it was unfair since working conditions were bad with; long hours, low pay and unsafe working conditions
  • Were tired of being treated unfair and wanted better working conditions

Actions

  • The NFWA joined a strike to stop working until they got better working conditions
  • The NFWA, Chavez led a 300 mile pilgrimage from Delano to California state capitol
  • The farmworkers tried to stop the sales of grapes

Obstacles

  • Employers were not required to negotiate with their workers and could fire them if they joined a union
  • Thousands of farmworkers and supporters were jailed, and two of the UFW strikers were killed on the picket line

Achievements

  • The Delano growers signed historic contracts with UFWOC in 1969
  • There was an immediate rise in wages, and fresh water and toilets were provided. The contract also included a medical plan and even clinics were built in Delano, Salinas and Coachella
