WHEN YOU THINK OF EARHTQUAKES, WHAT COMES TO MIND?

  • I think of the ground shaking and houses collapsing.
  • I also think of worried people screaming.
  • I think of the road beings cracked and tress falling over.

WHAT IS AN EARTHQUAKE?

  • Violent shaking in the ground
  • Sometimes causes destruction
  • In result to the earth's plates moving

WHERE DO EARTHQUAKES OCCUR?

  • Along the edges of plates
  • Where transform boundaries move
  • Plate boundaries

WHY DO EARTHQUAKES OCCUR?

  • At transform boundaries
  • When plates slide past each other
  • They form either a fault or an earthquake

WHAT IS DEVASTATION LIKE?

  • People running to find a place for shelter
  • Houses collapsing around you
  • Trees falling and making even more noise then there is already
  • Cars crashing to come to a stop

HOW OFTEN DO THEY OCCUR?

  • Magnitude 2 and smaller- several hundred per year
  • Magnitude greater than 7- once per month
  • Magnitude 8 and higher- once a year

  • " The Great Chilean Earthquake"
  • Magnitude of 9.5

WHAT PRECAUTIONS ARE TAKEN TO PROTECT PEOPLE FROM EARTHQUAKES?

  • Hide under a table or desk and hold your legs and cover your face
  • Pick a place where things won't fall on you and away from windows
  • Stay inside
  • Don't move until shaking stops
  • Watch for things that have fallen that could hurt you
