SPACE

PICTURE PLANE

SPACE REFERS TO THE AREA THAT CONTAINS A WORK OF ART. FOR A TWO DIMENSIONAL ART WORK IT IS THE SURFACE AREA CALLED THE PICTURE PLANE.

foreground, middle ground and background

One aspect of space is the depth or flatness of the work. When the artwork appears to have deep space, the artist often places objects close, far and in between.

distant by making them smaller

Sometimes an artist makes some things appear distant by making them smaller.

depth is through overlapping

Another way to imply depth is through overlapping where one object appears to partially cover another.

deep space through vertical location

when he uses elevation on the page to indicate depth. Objects closer to the horizon line appear to be farther from the viewer than objects closer to the bottom of the paper.

LINEAR PERSPECTIVE

is the systematic application of change in size and vertical location to imply depth.

DISTANT VIEW

When the artist shows the complete scene, it gives the viewer a distant view.

close-up view

When the artist shows only part of the scene, the viewer senses that they have a close-up view

profile

the viewer senses that they are beside the object.

frontal view

When the artist shows the front of the object, the viewer senses that they are facing the front of the object and have a frontal view.
