Jacob & Esau

Rebekah was carrying twins, and when they entered the world, the first was called Esau, and second was called Jacob.

Esau, as the first born, was given the birthright which was when the family name and titles was given to the eldest son, and he would also get the chief portion of the inheritance.

As the boys grew up, Esau became a skillful hunter, favored by his father, Isaac. While Jacob stayed home among the tents, favored by his mother, Rebekah.

One day, Jacob made some lentil soup and Esau came back from a long day of hunting famished, so he asked his brother for some soup.

Jacob offered the soup for Esau's god-given birthright, which Esau gave without a second thought, not thinking much of the birthright.

In the Lowlands of Scotland series, Jamie, who is gentle and is favored by his mother, and Evan the tougher and hunter us favored by his father.

In the book "Hard Times" by Charles Dickens he refers to the story of Jacob & Esau by saying "He who sold his birthright for a mess of pottage existed..."
