Subjunctive Clauses

  • Subjunctive clauses consist of:
  • An indicative clause (independent)
  • A towhitch (connects two clauses)
  • A subjunctive clause (dependent with subjunctive verb)

  • Purpose Clause
  • Indirect Command
  • Indirect Question
  • "cum" clauses

Result Clause

  • The indicative clause has a "ding ding" word
  • "Ding ding" words are usually translated as so or so much
  • Towhitch - ut/ut... non in the negative
  • Translated as that
  • Then the subjunctive clause

Some Ding Ding words

  • tam
  • tot
  • sic
  • tanta
  • adeo

Result clause example

  • I was so tired that I fell asleep early
  • So = tam
  • That = ut

Purpose Clause

  • Indicative clause (nothing special)
  • Towhitch - ut/ne
  • Translated as to
  • Subjunctive clause (nothing special)

Purpose Clause example

  • My mom went to the store to buy groceries
  • To = ut

Indirect Command

  • Indicative clause has a commanding verb
  • Towhitch = ut/ne
  • Translated as to
  • Subjunctive clause is the order to be carried out

some Commanding Verbs

  • Rogare - to ask
  • Monere - to warn
  • Imperare - to order
  • Persuadere - to persuade

Indirect Command Example

  • Caesar ordered the soldiers to set up the tents
  • Odered = imperare
  • To = ut

Indirect Question

  • Indicative clause has head verbs
  • Towhitch = question words
  • Subjunctive clause (embedded question)

Some Head Verbs

  • Rogare - to ask
  • Cognoscere - to know
  • Scire - to know
  • Nescire - to not know
  • Admirari - to wonder

Some question words

  • Quis - who
  • Quid - what
  • Ubi - when/where
  • Cur - why

Indirect question example

  • I do not know when practice is
  • Not know = nescire
  • When = ubi

cum clauses

  • Order of cum clauses are different
  • Towhitch, subjunctive clause, indicative clause
  • Three types of cum clauses
  • Causal, circumstantial, and concessive

Cum causal

  • Towhitch - cum
  • Translated as when
  • Subjunctive clause
  • Indicative clause
  • Ex. When the fighter tapped out, he lost the fight

Cum circumstantial

  • Towhitch - cum
  • Translated as because
  • Subjunctive clause
  • Indicative clause
  • Ex. Because it was getting late, mother told us to leave

Cum concessive

  • Towhitches - cum and tamen
  • Translated as although and nevertheless
  • Subjunctive clause
  • Indicative clause
  • Ex. Although they lost the game, nevertheless, it was close

  • I chose this topic because it makes a of sense to me and it
  • was very easy for me to learn.
  • This topic makes sense because I've been saying clauses like this my
  • entire life and I just didn't know what they were called, so it was a very
  • easy concept for me to grasp.
