LOCATION

  • Largest biome in the world
  • Covers 70% of Earth's surface
  • Includes 5 main oceans
  • Very salty - a cup of salt per gallon
  • Salt -abiotic factor

THREE VERTICAL ZONES

  • Top- euphotic zone
  • Middle- dysphonic zone
  • Bottom- Aphotic zone

WEATHER

  • Biggest influence on terrestrial climate
  • Provides rain for crops
  • Is it Sunny or cloudy??
  • Constant motion of the ocean
  • Either freezing or tropical

The a Average temperature of the ocean is 39 degrees Fahrenheit
The Sun only heats the surface while deep down it's cold and dark.

PLANTS

  • Over 1m. Types of species
  • Photosynthesis of algae/marine plants
  • Largest supply of oxygen
  • Absorption of CO2 reduces severity of climate change

KELP

  • Provides shelter and food
  • Used for toothpaste & ice cream
  • Absorbs energy from waves

PHYTOPLANKTON

  • serve as food for small fish to whales
  • Provide Earth with 1/2 it's oxygen
  • Live in Euphotic zone
  • Need energy from the sun

ANIMALS

  • Mollusks,fish,whales etc.
  • Deal with unique living standards
  • Salty and cold

MARINE MAMMALS

  • Have blubber to survive the cold
  • Sea otters have fur more dense
  • exchange 90% of their air in each breath
  • muscles can work anaerobically(w/o oxygen)

PEOPLE AND THE BIOME

  • People use the ocean
  • Food,medicines,oils,recreation

Demand for resources from the Ocean is damaging ecosystems and depleting
these resources.
Pollution is also a threat to marine ecosystems.

Pollutants such as fertilizers and household products that are put down the drain make their way through streams and rivers into estuaries, eventually into the ocean.

Oil spills are also a large source of pollution in the oceans.

SIMPLE WAYS TO HELP

  • Recycle
  • Don't let chemicals into the drain
  • Cut all 6 pack rings before disposal
  • Buy seafood that's harvested properly
