In May 1972, five men broke into the Watergate complex. They bugged the phone lines and stole copies of top-secret documents.
On June 17th they returned with a new microphone to replace one that had malfunctioned. This time, though, they were caught red handed due to a security guard noticing someone taped all the locks.
The spies were discovered to have connections to President Nixon.
And then he lied to the American public about it in a speech and made arrangements to coverup it up with "hush money"
