What causes a flood?
-A flood is caused when
water overflows or
saturates land that is
usually dry.
Where is flooding most common?
-Flooding can happen anywhere, but in Asia monsoons make it more of a target for flooding.
How is flooding measured?
-Flooding is measured in 3 categories. Major, moderate, and minor. Major obviously being the west and minor being the least disasterous.
5 interesting facts about flooding:
1.Nearly 1/2 of all flash flood deaths occur in cars.
2.Floods caused by hurricane Katrina were some of the largest in us history.
3.Floods occur in all 50 states.
4.In 1889 a flood from a dam break killed 2200 people within 10 minutes.
5.A flood can a happen within minutes.
This flood occurred when record breaking summer rain storms happened in China. China's 3 primary rivers, each massively overflowed their banks, overtaking China's very saturated soil. Soon after, levees and dikes broke to bring in even more flood water.
How large?
-70,000 square miles flooded.
How much?
-This flood killed over 4 million people and cost was no where near estimation.
Changes?
-Rebuilding of dikes, levees, and many homes .
