THE COUNTERCULTURE OF THE 1960'S

PEOPLE

  • Originated from the Beat Generation
  • Called "hippies", "freaks" or "long hairs"
  • Marked by long hair and vibrant colors
  • Made up of youth that rejected traditional values

Hippies would erect small communes in big cities. They became known as "Hippie Villages"
Small districts of San Francisco, New York City, and Chicago became prime locations for hippie living. Villages had gardens, farms, restaurants, music venues, and provided cheap, alternative
ways of living.

PRACTICES

  • "Free love"
  • Eastern religion, astrology
  • Marijuana, LSD
  • Alternative medicine
  • Vegatarianism, environmentalism

Meditation and yoga became common practice. Eastern philosophy dominated Christian philosophy.

“Do you own thing, wherever you have to do and whenever you want. Drop out. Leave society as you have known it. Leave it utterly. Blow the mind of every straight person you can reach. Turn them on, if not to drugs, then to beauty, love, honesty, and fun.”

DRUG USE

  • Drugs were used to expand the mind
  • Timothy Leary advocated LSD
  • Popular musicians used drugs heavily
  • Listeners would try to "recreate" the magic

Hippies advocated for gender, racial, and gay equality. They also supported abortion and opposed the war.

Folk musicians, like Bob Dylan, preached political reform. Religious influences could be found in pyschadelic rock, such as the Beatles.

  • 500,000 people
  • Push for love, peace, harmony
  • Heavy intoxication
  • Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Grateful Dead
