THE MISSION

  • Goal is to help people understand the past in order to make sense of the present and shape a more humane future

HISTORY

  • Opened to the public in January 1964
  • 6 Smithsonian Building
  • June 28 1955, Eisenhower signed a bill authorizing 36 million to build the museum

HISTORY

  • Architects were Mckim, Mead and White
  • Area of the Museum was 75,000 square feet
  • Three exhibition levels and a penthouse on the roof

THE MUSEUM

  • 14 St. Constitution Ave.
  • Collects and preserves over 3 million artificats
  • Currently 120,000 square feet
  • National Historic Landmark

COLLECTIONS

STAR SPANGLED BANNER

  • 40 ft long and 19 ft high
  • Displayed in a setting with floor to ceiling glass windows
  • Huge event on flag day

AMERICA ON THE MOVE

  • 2600 square feet
  • More than 300 artifacts from 1903 and after
  • Contains the first locomotive
  • Shows how America has moved through time

FOOD

  • Transforming the american table
  • 1950-2000s
  • Explores how technology, social and cultural shifts influence major food changes in amercia

FIRST LADIES

  • Looks at how the first ladies shaped America and Society
  • More than 2000 gowns
  • Gowns from Michelle Obama, Barbara Busch, Nancy Reagan and Jacqueline Kennedy

AMERICAN PRESIDENCY

  • Explores the life and impact of the 44 men in presidency
  • Contains signed documents and paperwork
  • Personal belonging such as books and ties

THE ARCHIVES

  • Holds an array of American history in documents, photographs and other works
  • Includes the history of major US corporations and famous composers
