competition is a positive factor

why?

increases consumer choice

by choosing-people determine if you succeed/fail. styles and models of cars matter

increases entrepreneural freedom

not a lot of obstacles to enter-people want to enter where profit is. used to be tech, now?

encourages investment and growth

firms try to get better to be competitive-research/innovation

keeps prices down and product quality high

can't charge too much... customers shop somewhere else

improves resource allocation/efficiency

immediately address shortage/surplus

what if we have a big company being a jerk?

government steps in to try to fix it

combines investigation act

try to 'undully lessen competition'

can we guess how effective that was?

didn't effectively define what 'unduly lessening' meant

also based on criminal law

proof beyond reasonable doubt needed-good luck with that

so before 1986

big businesses were crushing the little ones

competition act

encourage competition while promoting economic efficiency - 3 goals

recognize the role of foreign competition

recognize opportunities for canadian firms to compete in global markets

ensuring small and medium businesses

have an opportunity to participate in the economy

competitive prices for customers

bureau of competition policy

administers this act

they usually talk with firms

if they can't agree-competition tribunal

usually for mergers

this is better than the competition act

but still not the greatest... if you get caught though
