THE WAR OF 1812

  • With the British blockade, America needed to be self-sufficient.
  • This war helped America develop an autarky.
  • Domestic production increased.
  • America began its true independence.

INDUSTRIALIZATION'S BIRTH

  • The Industrial Revolution began in Britain.
  • In Britain, coal and water were combined to make steam as a source of power.
  • Steam powered large machineries.
  • The textile industry was the first to adapt these machines.

INDUSTRY IN AMERICA

  • The first region to develop industry in America was the North.
  • This is due to the fact that Britain had a higher influence in the North than the South.
  • With a booming society, the South finally caught on.
  • The South had their own unique influence of the Industrial Revolution.

A REVOLUTION WITHIN A REVOLUTION

THE NORTH

  • Northern cities consisted of great industrial areas.
  • These factories were the hearts of cities like New York.
  • The North further acquired more people.
  • Therefore, the North was highly populated compared to the South.

NORTHERN AGRICULTURE

  • The North did not consist much of agriculture.
  • The climate and soil of the North was not ideal for farming.
  • Although, small farms were in existence, they could not support the nation.
  • With no need of field labor, slaves were not in demand.

THE COTTON GIN

  • This machine separated the cotton from its seeds.

SLAVERY

  • With the cotton gin, also came the need for more slaves.
  • Slaves were needed to perform labor consisting of the gin.
  • A higher amount of slaves equal a greater profit.
  • 1808, itself brought a quarter million new slaves from Africa.

DOMESTIC IMPROVEMENTS

  • Although the North differed from the South, they still belonged to one nation.
  • President Madison and Henry Clay were determined to strengthen this nation.
  • Clay proposed the American System which a plan to strengthen the nations.
  • It was to use each regions' strengths to better benefit the Union.
  • Such that, the North and the South would benefit from each other.

THE PLAN IN ACTION

  • 1811, the construction of the National Road began, this would stretch from Maryland to Illinois.
  • Soon, came the Erie Canal which would connect the Great Lakes to the Atlantic.
  • The Tariff of 1816 was in place to protect domestic products from foreign products.
  • - Madison also established the Second Bank of the US to distribute currency throughout the US.
