TERMS OF THE COMPROMISE

• California admitted as a free state
• Slavery in Utah and New Mexico chosen by popular sovereignty
• Texas boundaries changed (Texas given $10 million in return)
• Slavery is legal in DC, but slave trade is illegal
• A new, extremely harsh Fugitive Slave Law is enacted

WHAT DID THE NORTH GAIN?

• California free stare
• Slave trade prohibited in DC
• Texas loses boundary dispute

WHAT DID THE SOUTH GAIN?

• No slavery restrictions in NM or UT territories
• Slaveholding permitted in DC
• Texas gets $10 million
• Fugitive Slave Law

The North benefitted more than the South.

There was an extra free state added, and Northerners ignored returning most runaway slaves, although there was the option for new states to hold slaves.

The Civil War was delayed by about 10 years because of the Compromise of 1850
