EUROPEAN EXPLORATION

CHRISTINA DAVIDSON

The conquest of Mexico began with an expedition to search for gold on the American mainland. In 1519 Cortés led about 450 men to Mexico in search for gold. Cortés established Spanish control among the Aztecs and set up trading posts throughout Mexico.

Spanish administration was concentrated mainly in the two centers of Mexico (New Spain), where they built the new capital, Mexico City, and Peru (New Castile) where they founded the city of Lima, both were governed individually by a viceroy. The Kings of Spain attempted to control the viceroys so they would not gain too much power and become individual, by subjecting them to the review of courts known as audiances. Still, viceroys determined most of the policies within their jurisdiction, due to difficulty communicating with the central government of Spain

When the English and the French first landed on the new world, they did not encounter many large societies. They ignored the indigenous people and pushed them out of the way when conquering land. They would also stake out the land that the indigenous people used for hunting and would claim it for themselves. Because of this, the indigenous people did not like the European immigrants. In order to provide for themselves, the native people would hunt on land of the migrants, and since the migrants saw hunting as a past time only for the wealthy, they were quick to exile the hunters. The native people also showed anger towards the migrants. During 1622, the native people massacred around 1500 people.

The Treaty of Tordesillas divided the newly discovered lands outside of Europe between Spain and Portugal, The lands to the east would belong to Portugal and the lands to the west to Spain. The treaty was signed by Spain 2 July 1494 and by Portugal, 5 September 1494.
