ROMAN EMPIRE

Monumental architecture
-refers to large man-made structures of stone(public-nature). Created to commemorate a person or important events. People assume to have been built by means of the collective labor of many people.Ex:large buildings such as temples, palaces, and pyramids.

AQUEDUCTS

  • Ancient Romans main architectural accomplishment.
  • Built to take water from the Francoli water to the city of Tarragona
  • Kept roman citizens clean.
  • Water runs for miles which is an example from infrastructure.
  • Composed by 25 upper arches and 11 lower arches

THE PANTHEON

  • The most preserved and influential building in ancient Rome
  • Dedicated to all the gods of pagan Rome
  • Agrippa built to commemorate the victory
  • Burned in 80 AD. then rebuilt by an emperor
  • Now one of the most impressive monuments

MOST MEMORABLE
The colosseum in Rome is the largest and most famous monument in the roman world. The construction started by emperor Vespasian in 72 A.D. Later his son Titus finished it in 80 A.D. The completion was celebrated with 100 days games. The colosseum was capable of holding 50,000 spectators who would enter the building through no less then 80 entrances.

MEDIEVAL EUROPE

500 - 1500

VEZELAY BASILICA

  • 1096 - 1132
  • Vezelay, Frace
  • Was a donated location for a monastery by, Gerald, Count of Roussillon
  • Vezelay Basilica was built in 1096, and was burnt down in 1104
  • Rebuilt from 1120 - 1132, tall, and slightly pointed arches

STAVE CHURCHES

  • Borgund Stave Church is located in Norway
  • Built around 1180
  • Dedicated to the Apostle Andrew
  • Multi-tiered roofs, wooden structures, rectangular timber fame

NOTRE DAME

  • Construction on this cathedral began in 1163 in Paris, France
  • Norte Dame is a church, a place of worship, and was built in the presence of Pope Alexander III
  • Construction ended in 1250, with an expansion of upper windows on side chapels, between flying buttresses
  • One of the most memorable places of it's time due to infrastructure, and innovation over other cathedrals

The purpose of Medieval Europe's Architecture is to have a place of worship while showing wealth, and new innovation's of art and architecture.

The roman and medieval similarities in architecture are arched columns, groin vaults, and tympanums. The Romans used concrete as a main build and faced walls with bricks. While in the medieval period the building were constructed differently they used stone blocks. They also develop the "gothic" arch with it's pointed top.
