ROMANI/GYPSY CULTURE

Spiritual Beliefs

  • The Romani do not have one specific religion associated with them.
  • In the past they did not follow any religion.
  • Today, they usually adapt to the religion of the area they are living in.
  • They sometimes refer to themselves as "many stars scattered in the sight of God."

Dress

Will wear gold jewelry and headdresses to symbolize prosperity and generosity.

Language

  • All Romani people speak Rromanës which is the Romani Language
  • Romanës is related to the northern Indian dialect, Punjab.

FAMILY

  • Romanians place a lot of value on extended family.
  • Multiple generations usually live together in one place, or near eachother.

GENDER ROLES

  • Women- preparing food, cleaning , women in traditional Roma communities will do fortune telling and begging.
  • Men- production of tools, baskets, and copperware that get sold to costumers, men have more specialized jobs such as trading and construction.
  • Both men and women take care of the children

SOCIAL ORGANIZATION

  • There are subgroups within each group which they call nations.
  • The family is the smallest permanent unit.
  • There are also temporary groups that travel together which are called kumpaniia or vortachiia.

CULTURE AND TRADITION

  • Showing wealth and generosity is a big part of the Romani culture.
  • There are rules regarding purity, cleanliness, and respect.

  • Entertainers

PROPERTY

  • Back in the day, gypsies were big on traveling from place to place in wagons.
  • People might still refer to Romani people as travelers, but now they use cars and RV's.

LAWS

  • General laws
  • Purity laws- the waist down is said to be unclean
  • Reproduction laws- There are very struck rules regarding pregnancy. A pregnant woman should eat alone and only cook using her own pots. The clothing that she wore while pregnant should be destroyed after.

EDUCATION

  • Education is joy such a big deal in Romani communities.
  • Many times children learn by participating in family activities, including economic.
  • In most communities, it is now required that children go to school at a young age.

RELATIONSHIPS

  • Romani communities are usually non self sufficient.
  • This means that they have to have relationships with ears to trade and buy with.

MARRIAGE

  • Romani usually marry young, some only in their teens.
  • The mans parents will often choose a wife for their son.
  • Gypsy weddings are usually very extravagant.
  • There is a show on TLC called My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding.

HOLIDAYS

  • Romanians celebrate some holidays based on where they live.
  • The Vlach Rom celebrate Christmas and Easter with feasts.
  • In Romania, there are holidays that celebrate the emancipation of Roma slaves.

  • Romani food has been called "the little know soul food."
  • Love of pepper and bread

  • Romani people are very crafty.
  • Tools and baskets can be made by hand.

  • Music is a big part of their lives.
  • Their music has a wide variety of styles.
  • It has influenced different types of music such as jazz and flamenco.

  • Horse racing
  • Billards
  • Soccer
  • Wrestling

  • They face some discrimination.

  • Many superstitions
  • Believe illness isn't just a concern of an individual.
  • Large gatherings
  • They burn the dead persons belongings so that no spirits will haunt them.
