UNDEARSTANDING ISLAM

BASIC INFORMATION

• Islam means peace, purity, submission and obedience
• Originated in the Arabian peninsula when Muhammad received the call to be gods messenger
• This religion is monotheistic, most in pre-Muhammad Arabia were polytheistic
• To convert to Islam, you must pronounce the "shahada", the testimony of faith.
• Muslims practice their religion by following the Quran, performing five prayers a day, and fasting during Ramadan.

BASIC INFORMATION

• Ka'ba is the holiest place for Muslims, located in Mecca
• Muhammad was born in 570 in Mecca. Was orphaned at 5 or 6. In 610 he had his first revelation.
• He then began preaching what he was told. Died in 632.
• The Quran is the Islamic holy book, believed to be the word of god as dictated to Muhammad
• Another sacred source is sunnah, or anything Muhammad approved or said.

• Jihad is the war or struggle against non-believers/enemies of Islam
• It is an important duty for all Muslims.

TOLERANCE FOR RELIGIONS

• Islam teaches in tolerance in the Quran
• They ask followers to allow non-followers to practice Islam
