ELIZABETH I

BACKGROUND

  • Elizabeth I was born on September 7th, 1533 in Greenwhich Palace
  • Her father, Henry VIII married Anne Boleyn in hopes of her bearing him a son,but instead she had Elizabeth
  • Henry was sick of Anne, and had her executed. He remarried numerous times and eventually had a son
  • On November 17th, 1558, Elizabeth became queen and remained so until her death
  • Elizabeth I never married and did not have children

BACKGROUND CONT.

  • After becoming queen, Elizabeth resided at the Tower of London
  • She lived in many palaces after that such as Westminster, Whitehall, Greenwhich, and Nonsuch
  • Elizabeth I died on March 24th, 1603 in the Richmond Palace and was buried in Westminster Abbey

GOALS

  • One of her goals was to wipe out the Church of England, established by her father
  • Also, she wanted to keep England out of war
  • She wanted a strong and stable government

GROUPS OF THE DAY

  • The Catholics and Spain opposed the monarch because Elizabeth was a Protestant
  • Not many people opposed Queen Elizabeth
  • Her people looked up to her and her reign was known as the "Golden Age"

FOREIGN AFFAIRS

  • Queen Elizabeth was in conflict with Phillip II of Spain
  • Elizabeth denied Phillip's marriage proposal
  • This as well as many other issues led to an invasion in 1587
  • Phillip wanted control of England

FOREIGN AFFAIRS CONT.

  • Queen Elizabeth supported Henry IV of France
  • Elizabeth had a diplomatic relation with the Czar of Russia

ABSOLUTE POWER

  • While Elizabeth was Queen, her government was run by 3 bodies
  • Monarch, Privy Council, and Parliament worked together to rule the country
  • These 3 branches made laws and raised money

OPINION

  • According to dictionary.com, an absolute monarchy is...
  • a ruler who governs alone and is not restrained by laws, a constitution, or custom
  • I think Queen Elizabeth is an absolute monarch
  • She worked hard to make England a better country
  • Elizabeth inherited a lot of power during her reign
