JOAH S.
My question is: Which color of hummingbird liquid, or drink, will attract the hummingbirds better, red or green? Also, which location will attract the hummingbirds better, outside the kitchen window or next to the garden box?
My hypothesis is: The red hummingbird liquid, or drink will attract the hummingbirds better. I also think outside the kitchen window will attract more hummingbirds.
My procedure was: I first put the water, warmed it up for 2 minutes, then mixed in the sugar and food coloring in a measuring cup. I put 4 quarter cups of water and 1 quarter cup of sugar in each feeder. One of the hummingbird feeders will have two drops of red food coloring, and the other one will have two drops of green food coloring. I put two hummingbird feeders, the same kind, next to each other.
I measured how much
sugar water I was
putting in the feeder,
and after 4 days, I
took out the
remaining sugar
water, and measured
how much the
hummingbirds drank.
I repeated this
procedure 3 times,
first to collect data
on the color of
the drink, red and
green, and then 3
more times to test
the two locations.
1st location outside kitchen window
Observations
Kitchen Window Location
The 1st week, green had 1 1/2 oz. left and the red 2 oz. Green attracted more hummingbirds. The whole week was fair and sunny!
The 2nd week, green had 5/8 of a oz. left red 3 3/4 oz. green attracted more hummingbirds. It was slightly cloudy A.M and fair and sunny P.M.
The 3rd week, red had 1 5/8 oz. left and green 4 oz. On the second day there was rain in the morning, but the rest of the week was sunny. Red attracted more hummingbirds. I noticed that the spot slightly further from the door seemed more popular.
2nd location near garden box
Observations
Garden Box Location
The 4th week I put it up near the garden box, and the weather was rainy on the fourth day, but sunny on the other 3. The red had 3 1/2 oz. left, and the green had 4 3/8 oz. left. Red attracted more hummingbirds.
The fifth week, the red had 5 1/2 oz. left and the green 4 oz. The weather was mostly sunny, with light rain one day. The green attracted more.
The sixth week, the red had 4 1/2 ounces left, and the green had 3 3/8 ounces left. One day was really rainy, but the rest of the week was fine. The green attracted more.
TOTAL OUNCES DRUNK AT EACH LOCATION
My conclusion is: Now I know the green is liked more by the hummingbirds. Also outside the kitchen window is liked more by the hummingbirds. I can use these results for filling and placing my feeders in the future.
