Methods of analysis

  • A relatively new, complex field with many methodologies
  • ISO 14040:2006 and 14044:2006 for LCA
  • But also LCI, LCC, LCSA, SLCA, LCIA, EIO, SLCA
  • Production, Operation, Maintenance, Repair, Insurance..
  • ..Infrastructure, Repair
LCI= Life Cycle Inventory (material and energy flows from and to nature)
LCC= Life Cycle Costing
LCSA= Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment
SCLA= Social Life Cycle Assessment
LCIA= Life Cycle Impact Assessment
EIO= Environmental Input-Output
SLCE=streamlined LCA= simplified LCA

USES OF LCA (2006)

USES OF LCA

USES OF LCA

USES OF LCA

  • Business Strategy (63%)
  • Research & Development (62%)
  • Product and Process Design (52%)
  • Education (46%)
  • Policy Development (43%)
Life-Cycle Assessment
Practitioner Survey;

Information Used to Characterize Uncertainty

Characterizing, Propagating,
and Analyzing Uncertainty in
Life-Cycle Assessment;
A Survey of Quantitative Approaches (2007)

Various types of supporting information were used, including information provided in reports, experimental data, results from other studies, practitioner knowledge of the product system, practitioner perception of data quality, and emission limits set by regulations.

LCI (Life Cycle Inventory) Data used is sometimes very small data sets, resulting in large confidence intervals

DQI: Data Quality Indicator (a semi-mathematical approach)

Arbitrarily: Non-expert judgement

Expert: Expert judgement

kJ/km*passenger

Life Cycle Assessment of Transportation Options for Commuters by Shreya Dave (MIT 2010)

Combined values from Fuel Production, Infrastructure, Maintenance, Manufacturing and Operation

Walking, Bicycle and e-Bicycle operation are 0kJ

Car has
Bus full is 40 people
Bus avg is 10,5 people

Boeing 737 is a representative mid-sized airplane with about 101 passengers. The consumption rates have been adjusted to include also luggage, freight and mail

CO2e [g]/km*passenger

GGE: Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Combined values from Fuel Production, Infrastructure, Maintenance, Manufacturing and Operation

For Walking, Bicycle and e-Bike contributions come from breathing and infrastructure

Car has
Bus full is 40 people
Bus avg is 10,5 people

Boeing 737 is a representative mid-sized airplane with about 101 passengers. The consumption rates have been adjusted to include also luggage, freight and mail

Bamboo Bicycle

Manufactured products - how can their life cycle sustainability be measured? - A case study of a bamboo bicycle (2012) (TUB)

This study is trying to combine LCA (Environmental Life Cycle Assessment), SLCA (Social Life Cycle Assessment) and LCC (Environmental Life Cycle Costing) into so-called LCSA (Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment)

It is kind of nice as it also tries to take in account working conditions in Germany and China, where the bamboo is sourced from unknown conditions.
