Islamic Empires

There were three Islamic empires

  • Ottoman Empire
  • Safavid Empire
  • Mughal Empire

Ottoman Empire

  • They were Turkish Muslims who conquered many places.
  • They used Janissaries and gunpowder weapons.
  • In 1453, Mehmed II conquered Constantinople.
  • A sultan is an Ottoman ruler.
  • The Ottoman Empire reached it's height under Suleyman I

the Safavid Empire

  • The Safavid empire were a group of Persian Muslims.
  • A Safavid leader is called a shah
  • In 1588, 'Abbas copied the Ottomans and used gunpowder weapons
  • In 1501, Esma'il made Shiism the official religion of the empire.
  • The Safavids blended Muslim and Persian culture.

The Mughal Empire

  • The Mughals united a diverse and large empire.
  • They were Turkish Muslims from Central Asia.
  • Babur founded the Mughal Empire in 1526,
  • Akbar, an Mughal empire, set up a religious tolerance policy.
  • After Akbar, a new emperor changed all his rules and the empire fell apart.
