There were various important cases but the most controversial cases were:
- the Brown v Board of Education supreme court case(1954) landmark decision allowed for the desegregation of schools
- The civil rights act of 1964: stopped segregation in public areas
- the Voting Acts of 1965: truly guaranteed what the 15th amendment promised
no one could be denied the right to vote based on race

The youth involved were important in gaining awareness
They participated in sit-ins & various peaceful protests
