Exploring linear relations

By: Rolando Martinez, Ali Muhammad, and Evan Huber

What is a linear relationship?

  • It is a term we use in math to describe the relationship between a constant and a variable
  • All you have to do is multiply the independent variable by slope. Then just add the constant. That is how you get your answer to a linear relationship.
  • It's kind of complicated but once you start, you will get the hang of it.

Here are some examples a linear relationship!

  • Let's say you have a book. You want to know how thick a stack of the same book is but you don't have more than one copy of the book. You can make a linear relationship between the thickness of one book and the height of the stack you want to make, like a stack of five books. That way you could solve that little question anywhere.

Here is another real world example

  • You have this school project where you have to make triangles out of toothpicks. You have five hundred toothpicks and you need to make seventy triangles. If you don't want to make all of those triangles all you have to do is make a relationship between the number of toothpicks you have and the number of triangles you need to make. That way you can graph it and find the amount of toothpicks you need.

We found somethng interesting

While looking up relationships we found out that there are other versions. we will now show you examples of some

Non-proportional linear relationship Ex.

  • I don't really know what this is but i looked it up and it seems pretty complicated. Luckily here is a real world example

Untitled Slide

  • You have this rectangular garden and it's about time you replace the old tiles around the garden. The problem about this is, you only have an estimate of the number of tiles you need. All you have to do is make a relationship between the garden VS. the number of tiles you think you need. That way you can see if your estimate was right or if it was off. Ultimately You will be able to get your garden repaired

Relationships that make lines but not linear

  • Now this confused us but we understood what they meant by the real life situation

Relationships with not so straight lines
