ROMANS IN SCOTLAND

  • The Roman invasion under Quintus Petillius Cerialis began in 71 AD
  • The Romans did not win until the battle of Mons Graupius in 84 AD
  • They departed Caledonia, now known as Scotland, in 213 AD

LANGUAGE

  • The Latin language were used by the natives of Scotland
  • For the purposes of religion

CHRISTIANITY

  • Roman influence assisted the spread of Christianity throughout Europe
  • And made Scotland's predominant religion Christianity

HADRIAN'S WALL

  • Quintus Pompeius Falco became governor of Brittania between 118 and 122
  • In his last year of office he hosted a visit to the province by the Emperor Hadrian
  • That resulted in the construction of of Hadrian's Wall
  • The stone wall was 80 miles long (117 kilometres)
  • Defense was the main purpose but it also controlled movement behind the lines

ANTONINE'S WALL

  • Construction began in 142 AD at the order of Emperor Antoninus Pius
  • The stone wall took about 12 years to build
  • It is about 39 miles long (63 kilometers)
