  • Labeled as an American Gothic writer
  • Middle class family, moved to New York when she was 14

Community gathered for annual ritual of the "lottery". Each family, men, women and children show up to the town square. They take role to make sure everyone is there. Then the oldest , men of the household draws a slip of paper from a box. The family that is drawn, they then have the family each member pull a slip and see if their piece of paper has a black spot on it. The person that does, has to go forward and then every person, child, women then stone the person to death. In the story the "lottery " the piece of paper that the mother drawn had the dot on it.
