GRAVES' DISEASE

WHAT IT IS

• It's an autoimmune disorder
• A hyperthyroidism disease
• It's the most common type of hyperthyroidism in the US

CAUSES

• Antibodies attack the thyroid gland
• The thyroid gland then produces too many thyroid hormones

SIGNS & SYMPTOMS

• Protrusion of the eyes (exophthalmos )
• Thyroid enlargement ( goiter)
• Insomnia ,anxiety, excessive sweating
• Muscle weakness,vision problems
• Increased appetite, increased heart rate

TREATMENT

• Medications to reduce symptoms
• Radiation
• Thyroidectomy
• Supplemental thyroid hormones
