STEM CELL THERAPY

WHAT IS IT?

  • An injection of healthy stem cells into your body to replace damaged or diseased stem cells.

WHY IS IT USED?

  • To help replace stem cells that has been damaged.
  • Or to help certain diseases.
  • It may be used for people who have blood disorders such as, leukemia, lymphoma, or multiple myeloma.

WHEN DID IT START?

  • Research mainly first started in the mid 1800's
  • That's when they discovered that cells had the ability to produce other cells.
  • Successful research began in 1956, by Dr. E. Donnall Thomas.
  • He successfully transplanted bone marrow for the first time.

IS STEM CELL THERAPY SAFE?

  • There are a range of diseases caused by stem cell therapy.
  • But research is still trying to find way for that not to happen.

TYPES OF STEM CELLS

  • There are many different stem cells throughout the body.
  • They are formed at different stages of your life.
  • Embryonic stem cells; come from the early stages of life.
  • Cord blood stem cells; come from a baby's obilical cord.
  • Mesenchymal stem cell; found in bone marrow.
