  • begins thousands of years before Europeans arrived
  • Hunter gatherers
  • 1769: settlers arrive, spanish and mexican
  • 10,000 in 50 towns

  • Expeditionary was led by Gasper de Portola
  • Mexican rivera of 80 men
  • accompanied by monks and artisans

EL PUEBLO DE NUESTRA

  • Permanent settlement established september 4 1781
  • Named in honor of the virgin mary
  • Oldest existing residence in the city
  • Today known as, Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES

  • Spanish and mexican population
  • Discovery of gold in 1848
  • Incorporated in 1850 by america
  • 1851 gained first newspaper

CITY STRUCTURE

  • Built inland along the river
  • Construced traditional spanish style
  • Families had lots of farmland
  • No taxes

CLIMATE

  • Suffered from severe floods in 1860s
  • Years of drought
  • People migrated because of their health

LOS ANGELES RIVER

  • Gasper de Portola led another expedition down southern california
  • Followed los angeles river
  • Discovered vast marshlands and animals
  • Beverley hills used to be a swamp
  • The river was used for growing crops

HOW IT EVOLVED

  • Increased labor led to more population
  • More population led to more housing
  • Trails became more advanced as roadways, eventually highways

FACTS ABOUT CURRENT CITY

  • Entertainment capital of the world
  • Only city to host summer olympics twice
  • Largest government outside DC
